On Wednesday, May 1, the 2013 Greater Dallas Business Ethics Award winners were announced. The winners of this prestigious award are Interstate Batteries, MRP Commercial Cleaning and The Richards Group. The 2013 honorees were selected from a pool of six finalists that included 1820 Productions, Agency Entourage, and HumCap. All six corporations were recognized for their demonstrated commitment to ethical business practices. Each finalist and winner was honored at the annual luncheon at the Westin Galleria sponsored by Akin Gump Strauss Hauer &Feld LLP and D CEO Magazine.

In addition, a team of 10 students from the Austin College Leadership Institute, led by senior Athena Padgett, are participating in the judging process as student evaluators. The student’s role is to visit the workplace of each nominated company and review the award submission with company officials as well as note their observations of company employees “in action.” The student evaluators will provide a written report to the judges in advance of the April judging meeting. They will also join the judges at this meeting to answer any questions the judges may have of their site visits and subsequent reports. In the past, these student evaluations have proven invaluable to the judges in terms of helping to humanize the written submission of each nominated company.

Nancy B. Rapoport, Gordon Silver Professor and Interim Dean at the William S. Boyd School of Law, University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Ms. Rapoport is an attorney, professor and author specializing in bankruptcy ethics, ethics in governance and the depiction of lawyers in popular culture. Most notably, she is the author of Enron and Other Corporate Fiascos: The Corporate Scandal Reader and appeared (as herself) in the Academy Award®-nominated movie, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (Magnolia Pictures 2005)
Rapoport will share her personality, wit and perspectives on ethics as practicing lawyer, professor and academic dean on May 1, 2013 at the Westin Galleria Dallas. She will also provide insight on ethics in today’s business world as well as the Enron fiasco and its lasting impact more than a decade later.
